And Julie thinks that ",{"text":230,"type":40,"marks":231},"they should be bracing for a lengthy down period",[232],{"type":114},{"text":126,"type":40},{"type":36,"content":235},[236,238,242],{"text":237,"type":40},"“I’m mentally preparing myself for maybe six months of self isolation. For the business, I think the bottom of the economic downturn will come in about nine months. So we’re preparing ourselves in medium terms, looking for costs we can cut in this period that we can then switch back on when we see signs of recovery. Otherwise, ",{"text":239,"type":40,"marks":240},"I’d be very careful about planning for any kind of sharp ‘V,’ thinking that things will turn around any time very soon",[241],{"type":114},{"text":243,"type":40},".”",{"type":36,"content":245},[246],{"text":247,"type":40},"Aaron Townsend, Financial Controller at Habito, has been constantly updating models for the past few weeks. And using Sequoia Capital’s Decision Matrix as a good starting point:",{"type":36,"content":249},[250,252,256],{"text":251,"type":40},"“The housing market has definitely been hit,” says Aaron. “Our assumption is that ‘first-time buyer’ and ‘next time buyer’ markets will be reduced by 60-90% over the next three months. ",{"text":253,"type":40,"marks":254},"Our remortgage market will maybe reduce by 30-40%",[255],{"type":114},{"text":257,"type":40},". We also do life insurance, which maybe won’t reduce by as much. As Julie continues, “my goal was to forecast all of these issues out, and assign owners in the leadership team to each item. This gave us something to go to our board and investors with, to get their feedback and give them comfort that we were on top of things.”",{"type":36,"content":286},[287],{"text":288,"type":40},"And speaking of investors...",{"type":164,"attrs":290,"content":291},{"level":166},[292],{"text":293,"type":40},"Talk to investors and key advisers as soon as possible",{"type":36,"content":295},[296,298,302],{"text":297,"type":40},"Startups hoping to raise funds during this period may be seeing their plans change. ",{"text":299,"type":40,"marks":300},"There’s less money in the market",[301],{"type":114},{"text":303,"type":40}," - at least in the short term - and investors have to take care of their own funds at the moment, too.",{"type":36,"content":305},[306],{"text":307,"type":40},"But that doesn’t mean that business leaders should go into hiding. Now is a great time to talk to investors, get their views and advice, and come out of this period in a stronger position to raise money.",{"type":36,"content":309},[310,312,316],{"text":311,"type":40},"“We’ve been extremely quick off the mark to communicate with our board about our coming plans,” says Aaron. “",{"text":313,"type":40,"marks":314},"We’ve examined scenarios and forecasts from lots of different points of view",[315],{"type":114},{"text":317,"type":40},", and tweaked them as new information has come out. This makes it a lot easier to have these fundraising conversations.”",{"type":36,"content":319},[320,322,326],{"text":321,"type":40},"“I also had a conversation with an old VC friend of mine who told me that they were asking every single company they saw to redesign their models from scratch. So over the past two weeks ",{"text":323,"type":40,"marks":324},"we’ve been building and rebuilding models based on the information coming out",[325],{"type":114},{"text":243,"type":40},{"type":36,"content":328},[329],{"text":330,"type":40},"For Julie, these stakeholders are a priceless resource. “We’ve been sharing notes and having conversations with our board chairman and our lead investor. They’ve given us updates on the market as they see it, and sharing details from their own forecasts.”",{"type":36,"content":332},[333,335,339],{"text":334,"type":40},"“We’ve also been talking to new VCs over the past few months. We want to stay warm with them, even if they’re not looking for investments at the moment. They’ve been able to ",{"text":336,"type":40,"marks":337},"give us advice and tell us what they’ve been seeing in the market",[338],{"type":114},{"text":340,"type":40},", linking us with connections in their portfolio, and other nice things like that.”",{"type":164,"attrs":342,"content":343},{"level":166},[344],{"text":345,"type":40},"Keep the runway as long as possible",{"type":36,"content":347},[348,350,356,358,362],{"text":349,"type":40},"For every finance expert we’ve spoken to here and at CFO Connect (",{"text":351,"type":40,"marks":352},"our community of finance leaders",[353],{"type":135,"attrs":354},{"href":355,"uuid":43,"anchor":43,"target":43,"linktype":139},"https://www.cfoconnect.eu/en",{"text":357,"type":40},"), the number one priority has been cash. ",{"text":359,"type":40,"marks":360},"The company needs spending money for the future",[361],{"type":114},{"text":363,"type":40},", even if that means reducing budgets and cutting back today.",{"type":36,"content":365},[366,368,372],{"text":367,"type":40},"So how long do those runways need to be? “12-18 months,” says Julie, “which is in line with what we’ve talked about with the board and our investors. ",{"text":369,"type":40,"marks":370},"That has required a definite haircut to our topline",[371],{"type":114},{"text":373,"type":40},". For most startups, auditors really only care about cash in the bank and the fact that you have a history of fundraising. If you can prove that you’ve got money coming in, they’re pretty likely to sign off. But today, they’re more likely to be hesitant in signing off an audit report where the business might go under in the next 2-3 months.",{"type":36,"content":410},[411],{"text":412,"type":40},"“So if you’re in that position, be detailed, lay out your assumptions, present a number of scenarios, and show that any cash you have coming in can be proved during this period.”",{"type":164,"attrs":414,"content":415},{"level":166},[416],{"text":417,"type":40},"Investigate special government grants",{"type":36,"content":419},[420,422,428],{"text":421,"type":40},"In the UK - as in many countries around the world - extra funds have been made available to companies who might otherwise let employees go. The ",{"text":423,"type":40,"marks":424},"Coronavirus Jobs Retention Scheme",[425],{"type":135,"attrs":426},{"href":427,"uuid":43,"anchor":43,"target":43,"linktype":139},"https://www.gov.uk/guidance/claim-for-wage-costs-through-the-coronavirus-job-retention-scheme",{"text":429,"type":40}," lets employers furlough staff and apply for a grant of 80% of each employee’s salary - up to £2,500 a month. For example, WeGift chose not to furlough any staff. “We’re still quite small - about 35 people. We looked around to figure out whether out whether it would make sense for us, [but] ",{"text":447,"type":40,"marks":448},"it was better for us to redeploy or refocus our people",[449],{"type":114},{"text":243,"type":40},{"type":36,"content":452},[453,455,459],{"text":454,"type":40},"Aaron’s team did a similar exercise, and came to a slightly different conclusion. “Broadly, ",{"text":456,"type":40,"marks":457},"we looked at the people who would be most impacted by the decrease in volume",[458],{"type":114},{"text":460,"type":40}," we’re going to experience. Those are probably people directly involved with customers. Of course they’re still our staff, and we want to make sure that they’re still part of our family and they can jump straight back in when we’re back up and running. So yes, we’ve looked at it and we have used it.”",{"type":36,"content":462},[463,465,469],{"text":464,"type":40},"If you believe that employees (and the company) can still be productive during this period, it may be best to redeploy them elsewhere. It’s still ",{"text":466,"type":40,"marks":467},"not entirely clear how these grants will be administered",[468],{"type":114},{"text":470,"type":40},", or how the money will be received and booked by companies.",{"type":164,"attrs":472,"content":473},{"level":166},[474],{"text":475,"type":40},"Pay special attention to new finance team members",{"type":36,"content":477},[478,480,486],{"text":479,"type":40},"The crisis caught everyone off-guard, and many businesses were in the middle of hiring drives. Aaron welcomed a new accountant into his team once the lockdown was in full effect, with another member to join in May. “All of our interviews were done over Google Hangouts or Zoom anyway, so we already have this digital relationship. But ",{"text":508,"type":40,"marks":509},"I’ll certainly need to make sure I’m talking to them at least twice a day",[510],{"type":114},{"text":512,"type":40}," - maybe more - to ensure that they’re coping well.”",{"type":36,"content":514},[515],{"text":516,"type":40},"“And as the restrictions lighten, it might be helpful for us to meet in person as soon as possible in the office, even if the whole company isn’t back yet. We’re a small finance team, so I think this is important.”",{"type":36,"content":518},[519,521,525],{"text":520,"type":40},"For finance teams still actively hiring during this period, what kind of profile should they look for? “",{"text":522,"type":40,"marks":523},"Target people who jump into the role right away",[524],{"type":114},{"text":526,"type":40},",” says Aaron. “You’re not going to be there physically next to them, so it’s more important than ever that they can pick up the role and run with it. I would even say it’s worth paying the person more if you’re going to get an easier experience out of it - if they’re going to make your life easier in the short term.”",{"type":36,"content":528},[529,531,535],{"text":530,"type":40},"Julie thinks this is a smart approach, crisis or no crisis. “Hiring somebody who’s a little overqualified is always nice.
